Should You Reuse Your Existing Office Furniture or Buy New?

Should You Reuse Your Existing Office Furniture or Buy New?

If you’re planning an office move, renovation or workplace redesign in Boston, one of the first questions may be: Should we reuse our existing office furniture or buy new?

The answer isn’t always one or the other. At Union Office Interiors, we often find that the smartest office furniture strategy combines both.

Start With How Your Office Needs to Work

Before deciding what stays, consider how your workplace has changed.

Are more employees working hybrid schedules?

Do you need smaller workstations, more collaborative areas or fewer filing and storage pieces?

Existing commercial office furniture may be worth reusing if it’s in good condition, fits the new floor plan, supports employee ergonomics and can be reconfigured efficiently.

But keeping furniture simply because you already own it isn’t always the most cost-effective option. Disassembly, moving, storage, replacement parts and reinstallation all carry costs. Older workstations can also dictate a layout that no longer makes the best use of valuable office space.

A Real Example: Werfen in Bedford, MA

‍

When Union Office Interiors worked with Werfen in Bedford, Massachusetts, the company’s workplace needs were changing. Traditional 8’x8’ workstations with significant storage no longer aligned with increasing headcount and a transition toward paperless workflows.

UOI helped create a new furniture standard that reduced workstation footprints and better supported the way employees were actually working.

It’s a great example of why an office furniture plan should begin with your people and space, not simply the furniture you already have.

Reuse, Replace or Combine Both?

The right decision considers your office floor plan, furniture condition, employee needs, budget, moving costs and future growth.

For companies planning an office relocation, office renovation or commercial office furniture update in Boston and throughout New England, Union Office Interiors can evaluate existing furniture, identify opportunities for reuse and help determine where investing in new furniture will provide greater long-term value.

Sometimes the smartest answer is to keep it. Sometimes it’s to replace it. And often, it’s a thoughtful combination of both.
